west papua music – A Message to Indonesia “Stop Killing West Papuan People!” has re-spread on social media. This time the protest is planned to be held again to discuss allegations of genocide and ethnic cleansing in West Papua. With the support of the Free West Papua Australia Organization, the demonstration will be held at the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne on October 4, 2018, at 1 pm-4 pm. However, this sit-in will not reveal the truths.
Allegations of Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing in West Papua
The Republic of Indonesia with 17,504 islands, 1,340 tribes, and 742 languages requires support from Asia Pacific countries to maintain its sovereignty. About 80% of Melanesian races or as many as 13 million people are spread in five provinces namely Papua, West Papua, Maluku, North Maluku, and East Nusa Tenggara. If genocide and ethnic cleansing do occur, could 80% of the Melanesian race be in Indonesia?
Military Attack on West Papua Activists
KNPB (Komite Nasional Papua Barat or National Committee of West Papua) raised the issue of attacks by the Indonesian military on local Papuans. KNPB made this issue to get sympathy from the international public. It is the Armed Criminal Group that continually worries West Papuans.
- Two TNI soldiers were shot dead in Puncak Jaya Regency on August 19, 2018. Both were tasked with providing food assistance for the school children of Tingginambut Village to celebrate the 73rd Indonesian Independence Day. However, both were found dead at the Tingginambut Bridge with gunshot wounds and arrows on their bodies.
- Five TNI members who were patrolling were shot at by the Armed Criminal Group on May 16, 2018. The Chief of Information of the Cenderawasih Regional Military Command, Colonel Muhammad Aidi, said that gunfire occurred in the hills between Kampung Sinak and Kampung Tirineri, about three kilometers from residential areas.
- In Kenayam (June 6, 2018), separatist groups opened fire on Trigana Air aircraft carrying Brimob (Mobile Brigades) troops. The group did not stop there; they also killed three civilians who were around Kenayam Airport, Nduga Regency. These three victims not only received gunshot wounds but also stab wounds.
- On June 27, 2018, brutal OPM actions took place in Torere District, Puncak Regency, Papua. The Armed Criminal Groups attacked on police officers who carried out security shifts for the election of the Governor of Papua and the election of the Puncak District Head.
Students of West Papua in Malang and Surabaya Arrested
Students from Papua were involved in an argument with Malang and Surabaya residents because of the same case, which was playing a movie that triggered the Free Papua Movement. Screening of this movie is considered to threaten the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia, so residents are calling for the screening not to be carried out. The students still insisted on screening it. Despite the dismissal by the Police, no students were arrested, and the case was settled by mediation.
west papua music – Every citizen has the right to express aspirations. However, the delivery of expectations must be under the law. Not only rights but citizens also have obligations regulated by law.
The Bombing on Alguru Village
KNPB spread another lie on social media. They used photos of forest fires that had occurred in Central Kalimantan and called them “Bombing on Alguru Village”.
On July 11, 2018, there was indeed a gunfight between security forces and armed groups which occurred when the authorities wanted to send provision using helicopters.
“At around 11:17 a.m. [East Indonesian Time], when the National Police helicopter was going to send food […] there was a shooting […] Because the circumstance was not possible, the National Police Helicopter returned to the Nduga Pol Post,” said Ahmad Musthofa Kamal, Head of Public Relations of the Papua Regional Police.
“We confirmed that there was no shooting from helicopters to armed criminal groups yesterday, let alone bombings,” he added.
The Attack on the KNPB Office
west papua music – The KNPB often states that their aspirations are restricted, but they can freely have offices in West Papua. The sweeping on KNPB headquarters went viral on social media. The KNPB also used this raid as evidence that the Indonesian military had acted arbitrarily. However, this raid was a follow-up to the alleged possession of ammunition by activists at the Timika KPNB Headquarters. Moreover, the police did find 153 ammo and separatist attributes during the search.
We are sick and tired, enough is enough, stop spreading lies! KNPB is a voice of particular interest, not the sound of the Papuan people.
